A little more info about our Super Premium Cameroon cigars. For those of you who were paying attention, you may be asking how an African named wrapper like Cameroon is grown in Indonesia. Basically, the same way Connecticut wrapper is grown in Ecuador. And the same as when you hear "Cuban-seed" when discussing tobaccos grown anywhere other than Cuba. Seeds are taken from that tobacco and planted and cultivated elsewhere. When experts apply their knowledge of the art and science of growing tobacco, the results can be quite rewarding. This is exactly the case with our Super Premium Cameroon.

A little more info about our Super Premium Candela cigars. Before the tobacco plant has fully matured, the leaves are harvested and dried quickly to lock in the plant’s natural chlorophyll content. Hence, the Candela wrappers does exhibit a noticeable green hue.

At one time, Candela was the most popular wrapper sold in the U.S. That was a while ago (early 70's) and was replaced by Connecticut shade wrappers as the most popular. Today, Candela cigars are considered retro and are now seeing a resurgence in the market. If you are looking for a high-quality example of a fine Candela cigar, you found one right here.

More Super Premium Info

What makes a Super Premium cigar a Super Premium cigar? What makes it different than our Standard Premiums?

1

Aging of the Tobacco

After fermentation, many tobaccos are aged for two to three years in bales made of burlap, or in palm bark tercios before rolling. Some tobaccos may receive as many as seven or more years of aging. Tannins are released while sugar levels increase to deliver a rounder, mellower, distinctly aromatic taste to the tobacco leaves.

And then, the finished cigars can be stored for additional time to marry the blend's flavors. All according the the wishes of the master blender. If done correctly, aging can and does increase the quality of of the finished cigar.

2

Different Tobacco Leaf Primings

Leaves from different parts of the tobacco plant are used in specific areas of cigar construction, and each leaf has its own name: Ligero, Viso, Seco, Volado, and Medio Tiempo. Don't want to go into a rabbit hole of details here, but know that different parts of the tobacco plant produce different smoking experiences.

Some are more rare than other parts making them naturally more expensive. Super Premium cigars tend to be blended for more nuance, more subtle flavors and more specific strengths and character and this requires more care in choosing the part of the tobacco plant when blending the cigar.

3

The Art of Blending Tobaccos

This is where the rubber meets the road. Combining different tobaccos to achieve a desired result. Typically, more time and effort is taken for Super Premium class cigars in the blending phase versus Standard Premiums.

Because of the inherent complexity of a Super Premium smoke, this blending process takes on more importance. Blend and test. Blend and test. Blend and test. Over and over again until it is as it should be. And this process can take weeks and months to do right.

4

The Construction

Ahhh...the rolling of the cigar. Did you know that many cigar manufacturers reserve the better rollers for their higher end cigars? Makes sense, right? More expensive materials as in the tobaccos. Higher expectations from the consumer. Potentially more difficult to roll because of the increased number of tobaccos used in the filler. Add to the above the fact that certain tobacco leaves are just more difficult to handle.

Super Premium cigars are all the above and because of that they require a little more care during the rolling of the cigar.

Now - in defense of our Standard Premiums...no defense necessary. The above does not in anyway take away from the goodness you will find in our Standard Premiums. Not at all. In fact, the opposite is true.

  1. Blending Process - Yes, the blends are simpler and do not use certain higher-end tobaccos used in the Super Premiums. The blend is still well vetted. The same experts that created our Super Premium blends created our Standard Premium cigars. The Standard Premium blends are balanced as they should be.
  2. Quality Tobaccos - Our Standard Premiums are produced using quality tobaccos using long-filler tobacco and high quality wrapper and binder tobaccos. Yes, at times the color of the wrapper may vary a bit where the Super Premiums will vary less. However, a good Standard Premium cigar should deliver value and quality. Ours do.
  3. Quality Construction - Our Standard Premiums are made in the same factory as our Super Premiums. Since they are a less complex cigar to produce, the need for a more experienced roller is not necessary. Match the right people/rollers/quality control with the right product and all is good.
  4. Not Everyone Wants or Needs the Super Premiums - Absolutely true. Most of our sales are the Standard Premiums. A lot of reasons for that. And to be honest, in this niche of the cigar industry, many times our cigars are handed out and enjoyed by occasional smokers and the Super Premiums are not needed. Sometimes the event does warrant higher-end cigars. And sometimes it requires both. We have you covered in any case.

About the Farm/Factory Where Our Super Premium Cigars Are Made

We source our Standard Premium and Super Premium cigars from a small family run farm/factory located in the Nueva Segovia Department in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua & Cigar Tobacco

Nicaragua has soil and weather condition comparable to Cuba, which makes it ideal for growing tobacco. Nicaragua has some of the most fertile soil for tobacco, so manufacturers are increasingly sourcing their tobacco from various regions in Nicaragua.

The Nueva Segovia Region

The Jalapa valley area is in the Nueva Segovia Department and is one of the 4 regions in Nicaragua known for producing world-class tobacco. The Jalapa valley has granular and reddish-brown soils that produce complex and wonderfully aromatic tobacco.

The Family Run Farm/Factory

Family owned and operated, the farm acreage and factory is located in the Jalapa valley. They operate a tight low-overhead business that allows them to produce high-quality cigars for a very reasonable price. Exactly the type of producer we look for.

Map-of-Nueva-Segovia
  • Esteli is where most of the Nicaraguan tobacco manufacturers are located. The Esteli region has hard black soil that gets a lot of sunlight during the growing season. The soil tends to yield a heavy, full-flavored tobacco leaf with a taste that’s extremely hearty. The tobacco from this region is dark and rich with full aromas, body, and strength. At times, it can produce a very spicy tobacco. y it now!
  • Jalapa is located  at the bottom of a mountain range. Jalapa’s fertile soil produces a very smooth, creamy, and sweet tobacco. While some tobacco grown in Jalapa can be full bodied, most of it tends to be more on the mild side. A lot of beautiful wrappers are produced in Jalapa.
  • Condega valley is north of Esteli. The soil is rocky, and tobacco from this region is mostly sun grown, yielding a thinner leaf. While much of the tobacco grown in the Condega region is considered filler, it does produce a small amount of rich-colored tobaccos that are excellent for wrappers. Tobacco grown in this area tends to be full-bodied and earthy, with a balance of sweet and spicy.
  • Ometepe is a volcanic island located in Lake Nicaragua. On this island, soil is exceptionally fertile, allowing for the ideal conditions to grow tobacco. The nutrient rich volcanic soil is known to give the tobacco a sweet, earthy taste. A one-of-a-kind soil and climate that produces unique high-quality tobacco.

The factory combines its own Jalapa grown tobaccos along with tobaccos from the other major regions in Nicaragua and Ecuador to expertly craft our Super Premium Cigars.

Their cigar making knowledge is comprehensive and their cigar making skill set is world-class. We gladly rely on them to consistently produce high-quality competitive cigars at each price point.

This absolutely aligns with one of our most important guiding principles in how we have approached this business from day one. That guiding principle...
*** LET THE EXPERTS BE EXPERTS ***

They excel in producing high-quality cigars. We excel in producing personalized custom cigar bands. Together the result is unsurpassed value.
